NZFSS stands for the New Zealand Freshwater Sciences Society, which is the new moniker of the New Zealand Limnological Society (founded in 1968).

What is Limnology? It is the science of freshwaters. Some limnologists describe limnology as "the science of ropes and buckets." Limne is Greek for "lake", but this society includes people interested in all freshwater ecosystems.
